Kindergarten students weave fabric studies and snuffle mats into a service project for Seattle Humane Society
Westside School’s kindergarten classes have been studying fabric in science. When we heard the Seattle Humane Society needed some fabric mats, we decided to team up for an adorable service project! The kids spent the last two weeks weaving snuffle mats designed to help eliminate boredom for the shelter dogs. Together we created ten mats for the dogs, and were fortunate to have some extra visitors come to campus when the Seattle Humane Society came to pick up the mats.
Zelda, a trained therapy dog, as well as several adoptable cats came to meet the students and interact for a fun filled afternoon. Kindergarten students had the chance to learn about safe interactions with animals, and how to approach an unfamiliar animal. The students loved getting to pet the animals, and see some of Zelda’s many talents.

Don’t miss the current exhibit and see wonderful graphite drawings of animals patiently created by the Middle School Drawing Exploratory students as they studied about proportion and value.
You will also find a sampling of some fantastic animals created by the fifth grade class as they learned about and created their own Alebrije animal sculptures and Amate paintings. Both of these Mexican Folk Arts came to life in their studies in Spanish as well as in Art. You may have seen the original works of art if you visited the World Language Exhibition of Learning in March.
The fifth grade class is also displaying their drawing sketchbooks; the result of a lengthy unit that introduced them to a variety of drawing techniques. This unit focused heavily on helping students realize the benefits of using drawing as a tool for learning and communication.
If you think the animal theme stops with two-dimensional art think again. There are some distinct and magical animal sculptures created by the Middle School Metals Exploratory class. These ambitious projects involved the students in learning to work with wire and found materials to create volumetric animal forms. Each one is unique and presented numerous challenges for the students as they invented ways to attach and fashion their materials into these tactile sculptures.
