Francesca reflects on friendships,pre-kindergarten, and the Westside School tradition of Reading Buddies

Posted on Updated on

In anticipation of our 35th Celebration, we’ve asked some of our eighth grade students to share their Westside Story. Westside School is what it is today because of 35 years of stories. We’d love to hear yours.

I began my journey at Westside School when I was four years old. At that time the school was much smaller than it is now; there was no Middle School, and we were located at the building we shared with Explorer West. When I started at Westside I was in pre-kindergarten and my teacher was Claudia; she still teaches pre-kindergarten today, too! I loved that year because we got to play dress up a lot, learn about numbers, and my favorite part was being able to have reading buddies. I liked being able to hang out with the older kids because it made me feel special and sometimes I would even get the chance to try to read the books. Being able to be with other students in different grades is really important because you get to make new friends with people who are a different age than you and bond with them. I love how Westside School is very inclusive and they like to mix together different grades in some of the classes, especially in Middle School.

EXHIBITION OF LEARNING – CANCELED

Due to a very packed spring schedule, the Lower School has elected to cancel the Exhibition of Learning scheduled for this Thursday, May 26. We hope you enjoy the variety of student work that will be on display during the Spring Fling on June 2nd at 6:30 p.m. as well as the many individual classroom presentations and gatherings that are scheduled throughout our final weeks.

FIELD DAY

Ask our kids and they will tell you – Field Day is one of their favorite activities. This year Field Day will take place on Friday, June 3, and as always, we need our parents help to make this possible. We start with a pizza lunch and awards presented by Emily Gussin, followed by the always-popular fourth grade donut-eating spectacle! Games will then begin as groups move through activities and we will finish with popsicles.

As mentioned, this event is not possible without volunteers so please sign up now!!!!

A Stegasaurses tail and a T-Rex Tooth: pre-kindergarten students explore at the Burke Museum!

Posted on

The culmination of the pre-kindergarten class’s exploration about dinosaurs was their trip this week to the Burke Museum. Students saw the reconstruction of the head of a Triceratops, skeletons of an Allosaurus, Stegasaurus and Elasmosaurus. They also touched fossils and then discussed specifically a T-Rex tooth, a spike from a Stegasaurses  tail, the grinder teeth from a herbivore and a vertebra that was about the size of pre-kindergarten teacher Claudia’s fist! Students noticed the vertebra was heavier than everything else. After reading a book with the docent, each child received a paper so they could go on a scavenger hunt and find many different things on display.

A bouquet of Forsythia blooms in pre-kindergarten

There are signs of spring all around us! Westside School pre-kindergarten teacher, Claudia, brought in a bouquet of forsythia for the pre-kindergarten students to observe and draw. They looked carefully at the branches and noticed the colors, shapes and lines. They selected the colors to be used and began drawing. Their pictures are now displayed in the pre-kindergarten hallway. Come see them!
